The Four Pillars Upon Which You Should Build Your Business
For most people, the word “entrepreneur” is synonymous with the phrase “hard worker”. And there’s some truth to that – owning a business often means working while others are relaxing.
Most entrepreneurs make good money, yet they spend their days putting out fires and thinking about their employees and contractors.
Does that sound familiar?
While owning your own business and setting your own schedule might seem like the finish line, for most entrepreneurs it’s actually just the beginning. Being able to work from anywhere in the world is great, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you get to have a lot of free time. In fact, it may mean that you are still hunched over your computer all the time, checking your email and making calls.
Some of us have learned this lesson the hard way. When we first launched our business, it didn’t take long for us to realize that working hard wasn’t necessarily the best way to get where we wanted to go.
Now, we’re not going to fall into the cliché of saying that it is just a matter of “working smarter not harder” – because the truth of the matter is that scaling any business will require tweaking a lot of different factors, a lot of moving pieces that will all have to mesh together.
And it’s not just a cute slogan, an idea, or a plan of action in one area. The best way to grow your business without sacrificing more time has to do with addressing what we call the “Four Pillars of Growth”.
These pillars are the Why, the Who, the What, and the How of your business.
The Why is all about you and your role as leader of your business. It has to do with your vision for the company as well as the motivations that drive you to progress and to overcome obstacles.
After the Why has been established, you need to turn their attention to the Who, the people who will make up your team.
More than just putting an ad in the classified section of the newspaper, building a team requires having a corporate culture and defined values. This pillar MUST come after the Why, because if you don’t know which way your company is headed, how can you possibly hire the right people, the ones who will share your vision and will be passionate about the projects you take on?
The What and the How are the strategy and the systems, respectively. These are the tools that you will use to make your vision into a reality.
But do you want to know something kind of sad? Most business owners do it all backwards and start with the last two pillars. They think, “What is the latest gimmick that I can use to hustle up some money? What is the popular strategy that I can do to grow my business in 90 days? What is the newest traffic tool I can implement?”
But because they haven’t taken care of the first two pillars – the pillars that at the end of the day will define whether or not your business will grow – their hard work doesn’t bring the expected results and they stay chained to their smartphone/computer – even when on vacation.
More than that, building a business the right way directly affects whether or not you have fun growing it. Because if we’re already spending our day working on something, shouldn’t we have a blast doing so? Shouldn’t we have the time of our life while working?
And that’s really what it’s about. It’s not just about building a business. It’s about building something that has meaning to you. It’s about doing something that makes you happy and that impacts other people in a meaningful way.
