The Genius Zone Advantage
I always tell my business partner and husband, Jack, that I love the enterprise and love being in business and what it can do to develop people.
Developing people is the cornerstone of creating abundance, wealth, and lifting quality of life for yourself and others. When we first started down the entrepreneurship road, we didn’t understand this as clearly. We knew we needed to develop ourselves as doers back then… and as we went about the path of business building, we saw the need to develop ourselves as managers, and then eventually as leaders.
What we missed back then and is only clear in hindsight… is that everyone has a specific area where they are a genius including ourselves.
Yet almost nobody knows what that is, and as a result so many are spending their days doing stuff we, in the best case enjoy at least somewhat but in the worst case cant’ stand. But we do it because we are probably good at yet not passionate about.
What we realized s that our leadership development started even before we were the doers in our business. With the benefit of hindsight we understand now that leadership starts on the inside, by LEADING yourself and in your own life. This has to be the first step of leadership because otherwise any business you start would have only amplify your inner chaos.
Actually leadership is not an elite club for a certain few either in business or politics. It is the true essence for all human beings and it starts with self-awareness and a desire to live up to your potential. In my personal experience, leadership has evolved in the context of business and an enterprise. It has come out of a deep yearning to expand in capability and capacity as I grow and as our team has grown in quantity and more recently over the last 2-3 years in quality. And it has to focus on your Genius Zone.
And then when you expand from yourself to leading a team you also want to keep a close look at their genius zones.
What is that elusive Genius Zone?
As mentioned already it’s an area of a person’s life where they shine. Where they are simple at their best, and Love every moment of it. their eyes shine, they are engrossed in the moment and time flies by. Some people call it “flow” and it’s essentially the same thing.
You have one of those and every one of your team members has one too.
The problem is as mentioned that 99% of us don’t know what it is.
So after we went through the process of figuring ours out realized that the key to developing the people in our team has been a genuine desire to identify and allow them to operate in their own unique Zone of Genius and building processes and systems from this point on and not the other way around.
In other words you don’t stick people into the jobs based on need, but you find people who LOVE that function/job because it matches their genius zone and then you reward them for doing what they love. Doesn’t that sound like a much more successful variation of hiring? Not only that. The Genius zone is also part of what makes your team rally behind your Vision and Mission because it allows them to operate fully and live fully each and every moment they spend at work.
